Safe Susan Shaw Books

I'll admit, I almost didn't want to finish this because it was a tad slow to start. But it really picked up midway and formed into a deeply riveting, poetic story. Tracy Winston is a 13 year old who's brutally raped attacked by an 18 year old boy. Tracy goes through the all emotional woes after being attacked. The scars. The shame. The pity from others. All because she doesn't feel safe, the safeness her late mother instilled in her as young child. She even goes as far neglecting and abandoning friends and hobbies she was once fond and loved; finding solace in her new love for the piano that clears her dark memories of her rape and is therapeutic. This book isn't too action packed but more of a realistic, psychological upheaval of a young girl beating the odds of her victimization and overcoming it one step at a time.

The reason why I only could respectfully give it 4 stars it was missing the 'how' and 'why.' Why Burgess committed this crime? How did Tracy's mother die? Granted, I see why Shaw took the approach in only focusing on Tracy's trama, yet those were a couple of misses opportunities that should had been addressed. Overall still a must read to take a chance on reading.

Safe Susan Shaw Books Reviews

I havent resd this book. yet. Im needing some advice here. Should a pre-ten read this?I did read speak, but the rape was brief. I just gave it five stars because I know this lady writes good books.
Good realistic fiction about a girl who is raped at age 13 and is trying to put herself back together again. This book shows how she tries to cut herself off from her friends because she feels dirty and thinks she needs to be by herself to heal. This could be a powerful book to certain readers. Shaw's a good realistic fiction author; her book The Boy in the Basement was chilling. I gave this book a 5/5.
Safe reminded me a lot of Speak, because it's about a normal, likeable girl who's raped and works hard to survive, and eventually, succeed in life. The writing style is also similar, it is absolutely perfect for the story. Unlike the heroine in Speak, Tracy's rape is no secret. Safe focuses, instead of on secrecy, the fear and alienation Tracy feels because of what happened to her. Her father and her friends are very supportive, but she just can't connect with them like she used to, because everything feels very scary and strange to her. This wasn't a fun read, but an enjoyable one in that every triumph Tracy makes, you'll be happy for, because she's a very likeable heroine. It's a good book about a young woman's journey to feeling content and safe again, the troubles along the way, and the family and friends who are always there for her when she needs them, but can leave when she needs time by herself.
This was a low-key, almost elegant treatment of what can be a very messy topic. Although the protagonist was clearly raped and brutally beaten, the attack itself is not described at all, so I think the book would be suitable for young teens and even some mature tweens in spite of its subject. It was easy to sympathize with Tracey and her trauma and slow psychological recovery from the event was realistic, as were the actions of the people around her.

This would be a good companion book to the oft-recommended Laurie Halse Anderson novel Speak.
Somebody left this book in the break room at work. Having nothing else to do, I picked it up and started reading it. This is not one of the genres that I normally read. I was quickly absorbed by the effortless prose of this writer. Written in the first person narrative with such a fluid and masterful grace, I found it very easy to connect and care about the protagonist. That is saying something, considering that I am a male in his early 40s and this is a young adult book obviously written for a female audience. Susan Shaw is a very gifted writer!
As to the story itself, I found it very moving. While another review didn't like that it didn't go into the motives of Burgess, or how Tracy's mother passed away - I found that refreshing. It would have been irrelevant exposition totally unnecessary to the theme. I also liked that it didn't go into any real details of the rape that Tracy endured. It would have been unnecessary and made the material inappropriate for the audience the author is going for.
It only took me an hour to read this book. The material is appropriate for 6th graders and up. Due to the heavy subject matter, I would encourage parents to read this before allowing their young children to. It would also be a great tool to bridge the subject with their kids. Rape and molestation is a subject that every parent should address with their children, and this book is an excellent tool in which to do so.
I highly recommend this book!
Shaw handles an ugly subject very well in this book. "Safe" is well-written, focusing on the many different ways trauma and its aftermath can present. As other reviewers have mentioned, the attack and rape itself is not described in detail - but nor is it glossed over. We're given exactly enough information to understand what happened and exactly how it affects Tracy.

There's one glaring flaw in the book, however. It takes place over the span of a few months after Tracy is raped, and gives the impression she is fully healed and completely fine by the end of the story. In reality, this is unheard of. Rape survivors commonly struggle with the aftermath of their attack for years, sometimes decades, especially when they're as young as Tracy (who is just 13). This is strange on its own, but especially when taking into account that one of the book's major themes is Tracy grieving for her mother, who died many years ago. How is it that she's able to process the trauma of a rape so quickly in comparison?

Nevertheless, overlooking that flaw, this is a really excellent book. 4/5 stars.
I felt the story kind of dragging along. Lost interest pretty quickly into the book. Scary topic, but important to read about nonetheless. Package arrived on time and in good condition.
