Three years ago, as ship's mage of the starship Blue Jay, Damien Montgomery was pursued to the edge of human space by both the agents and enemies of the mage-king of Mars before being brought in from the cold. Now, trained in new skills by the mage-king himself, Damien has been sent to the planet Ardennes alongside Alaura Stealey, hand of the king. A rebel movement there has destroyed cities fighting a governor seemingly lost to corruption. But not all on Ardennes is as it seems. As allies become enemies and an entire world comes apart in chaos around him, Damien will find both his skills and integrity tested to the utter limit.

Hand of Mars Starship Mage Book 2 (Audible Audio Edition) Glynn Stewart Jeffrey Kafer Tantor Audio Books

First let me say that I have all of the books this Author has written and I love them all. With the Hand of Mars Damien has grown up and must face the challenges and difficulties that come with his talents and abilities, Filled with action and conflict the book takes the reader realistically through the the emotional growth necessary when the responsibility of command demands action; action that can result with no real winners if one "Does the right thing". Too many times people compromise but the author is able to realistically communicate the concept of right from wrong. That evil can masquerade as actions done for the greater good.

I truly hope there will be a book 3 and look forward to reading it.

Hand of Mars Starship Mage Book 2 (Audible Audio Edition) Glynn Stewart Jeffrey Kafer Tantor Audio Books Reviews

No spoilers...Damien is back with a wallop and whilst there were elements of the Omnibus I preferred, this is a good sequel, that leaves you wanting more.
I would've liked a bit of insight into Damian's further training but that's just because we saw his earlier development and it might've strengthened the story links.. Character development is good and there's enough action and tension to keep the pages turning.
There needs to be a little better attention paid to editing, the lapses are pace dampeners but that's no reason not to enjoy the trip I certainly did and look forward to the next in the series.
The first book came out and it was promising. This second book Hand of Mars, is rather flat. It is about a young Jedi{Mage} finding his powers. Leading a ragtag Rebel army again a local Tyrants . Then another cookie cuter- spaceship battle scene to save the day......
If the author stay with an interesting story about the Mage. It would be an interest read. I'm getting way from Sci-fi books that are all about battle sense..

Unlike the (excellent) vignette-omnibus first book, Hand of Mars is a continuous story from beginning to end. Damien is sent on his first mission, working under Alaura Stealey. The job starts out as an investigation, and rapidly ends up including extensive combat and some diplomacy (or at least team-building) when cut off from support. Lots of "can't-wait-to-see" that is always delivered, and a few "didn't-see-that-coming" moments. Thoroughly enjoyed!
I've been reading science fiction for 52 of the 63 years I've been alive. In that time, I have seldom picked up a sequel volume to some story, and found it to be every bit as good, if not better, than its predecessor. Fortunately, I can say exactly that, about 'Hand of Mars'. It surpasses its preceding volume, 'Starship's Mage' by quite a bit, in terms of its tightly woven plot, the twists that come unexpectedly, and the solutions to plot problems that are never what one might expect - and are never 'deus ex machina' in their construction. It was one that I put down - when I had to do so for some reason - with great reluctance.

I'm traveling from almost Philadelphia to Honolulu, in a few weeks, on vacation, and I just purchased the third volume in the series, 'Voice of Mars', and have it on my tablet, waiting to entertain me on the pair of long airplane rides.
Before you read this one, please note it is the second book in a series you need to have read book one or this one won’t make much sense to you. If you enjoyed the first book in the series, the second picks up a few years later and more of a maturing process for young Montgomery as he becomes one of the Hands of Mars. The author has an engaging writing style and makes you feel as if you are right in the middle of the action.

I picked this up for $4.99 in the store and certainly received its worth in entertainment value out of this one if you enjoyed the first book in the series I’d recommend you giving this one a try.
Man has conquered space with the use of magic. Mars is now the power center of the galaxy. The Martian King bestows special powers to a small cadre of Mages that are known as a "Hand of the King". Whatever is said or done by the Hand is the same as if the King had acted. A Hand and a new apprentice are sent on a fact finding mission. They find the Space Navy backing the Governor turned dictator and civil war imminent. Foul, cruel murder is done to the Hand and the fledgling apprentice seeks to stop the war and bring justice to the Governor and Navy.
the plot is very good as is the writing. The characters are fully developed but grow as they face trials. I couldn't put the book down and I recommend it to all with no hesitation. I also highly recommend GLYNN STEWART as an author who never disappoints.
It is hard to put my finger on what I don't like about this series. Don't get me wrong - it is a good book - the world is extremely well described and believable, the actions of the characters make sense, the main character seems likable, the pace of the story is steady and the plot is good. I could go on - this is a great book by almost all measures.

What bugs me about this book is the lack of insight into the emotions of the characters. The characters are wooden to me. Just as in the real world or in a movie, we can judge the characters by their words and their actions, and in that context the characters are consistent at least. But we're on the outside looking in, even for the main character.
